History

In an ActionScript application the communication between objects mainly happens by the broadcast of native or personalized events. But what is a personalized event?

It is an event which doesn’t exist in Flash player but that we add to manage different interactions between our objects. For a long time ActionScript has integrated different classes allowing the broadcast of events.

The first AsBroadcaster was integrated into the Flash 5 player, its native implementation had become a favourite of ActionScript developers. Its replacement BroadcasterMX introduced later by Flash MX and coded in ActionScript was less well welcomed. Today these classes don’t exist in ActionScript 3 and are replaced by the native flash.events.EventDispatcher class.

In a graphical interface we could have a button broadcasting an event indicating its active or inactive state. A class generating PDF files could broadcast events relative to the process and creation of a file. The broadcast of personalized events follows the logic of how to create personalized objects.
